How Do You When You Haven’t in a While???

I hope you’re all well. Happy New Year ๐Ÿ™‚ As you know it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything. Alas, what can only be described as a family packed Christmas and frankly Hellish New Year got in the way. I have however managed to get all the edits done on my novel and gotten it back to my editor. Yay right? ๐Ÿ™‚ Well yes but this presents me with a whole new set of circumstances I’ve not been in for a while. I now have the burning, eternally nagging desire to write the second in the series…….

My first novel Incarnate, now happily nestled in the arms of my cracking editor, is for want of a better phrase my baby. No matter how many times it gets sent back to me I’ll work on it and work on it until some lovely publisher can’t live without it. There’s no problem there. But you see, I’ve been working on that story for nine years give or take six and a half years of disastrous time with my ex fiancรจ and no desire to write what so ever. My beloved characters are now so very firmly set in the events of my first novel that to be honest I’m finding it hard to start the second one. I know where I must begin but what if my ability to re-establish my protagonist suffers due to my inability to get past the first story? What if my scene setting is no longer believable? (Though I do write fantasy lol). These are the thoughts that plague me.

Others were I know how to begin it but I don’t; I know what I want my characters to do but how do I portray that? Do I use tried and true techniques like dreams or go for a bit of realism? Should the magic kick everything off or should we have a nice, meaty battle to begin? These questions are neither here nor there to be honest though, I do love a challenge ๐Ÿ™‚ I guess I’m just trying to portray to you my happiness in continuing to write and carrying on with a story as close to my heart as my own little family is. Hence the erratic flow of thought and endless questions ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway I’m off to at least try to continue. I think I’ll do a book review tomorrow. Toodles ๐Ÿ™‚

Here is a guest post by yours truly exploring the concept of fear and phobias. Admittedly I have a few so I could pull from life but everyone should have a go at writing out of their comfort zone. I hope you enjoy and I hope you follow Helena for some great fiction with ooey gooey literary goodness ๐Ÿ™‚

For One Of My Best Friends

Evening lovely readers ๐Ÿ™‚

inspire

Have you ever noticed that sometimes inspiration can pop up and smack you round the chops without your realising? A wonderful instance happened to me that has urged me to write something outside my comfy-almost-like-pyjama’s fantasy genre. I received a message off one of my best friends and the lovely lovely lady had meant to type the word probably. However due to her phone mishap I got the name Rob Ably instead ๐Ÿ™‚ This was my *Ping* moment Ladies and Gentleman and this children’s story is what came from it. This is for you Cheryl Denise Westby, I hope you like my silly jaunt ๐Ÿ™‚

The Tale of Rob Ably and The Missing Gerri-Faff

Little Princess Narky Nappy was not a happy girl. She screamed the palace down and down from pillar up to pearl. The King and Queen were really sad not knowing what to do. What could have set their darling off? Was it something new?

baby-crying

They rushed into her nursery affright with all the noise. They searched and looked and gave her tons of all her sparkly toys. But nothing would ever do and would not make her laugh. They finally saw the problem too she’d lost her Gerri-Faff.

giraffe

They searched and searched but could not find the little animal. They’d pull someone up from the town ’twas always nice and full. They rushed on over to the phone sat nicely on the table. They need a man with hearty will who’s good and nice and able.

Twas Rob Ably that turned up, a good and happy fellow. He took it with a pinch of salt and kept it nice and mellow. He promised he would search the World to find her this lost toy. And with a sigh he started off on the long and lonely ploy.

feet

He decided he would search up high upon the mountain range. He couldn’t find it anywhere nor birds flight which is strange. There were no trees, no rocks nor bush for life to live and hide. There were no nooks and cranny’s for a Gerri-Faff to reside.

Next he settled on the beach in hopes of search and sun. There were no people here in fact enjoying all the fun. The golden sand did burn his feet and caused a rosy hue. But missing from this perfect scene was a little Gerri-Faff too.

At last he came upon the sea all beautiful and clear. He trembled as he looked upon in such a dreaded fear. He had not found the Gerri-Faff, not hide, not hair, not stuffing. When it dropped into his hands, dropped by a passing puffin.

Rob wanted to jump for joy, to bound, to scream and leap. At least he knew now once at home his small life he would keep. He placed the Faff deep in his bag and shut it nice and tight. He needed to get it home right now with no dark extra fright.

And so Rob jauntily sauntered off with high hopes for the Faff. He returned it to the throne to make the Princess good and laugh. Rob was honoured for his deed, given titles, lands and lease. And finally the small kingdom returned to its natural peace.

THE END

This was just a silly rough attempt at a children’s story, pay it no mind ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

Jessica by Helena Hann-Basquiat with J.S Collyer et al

Evening lovely readers ๐Ÿ™‚

jessica6As promised here is my review of the riveting Jessica by some of the most talented writers you will find. Again I will be sounding like a broken record but I LOVE FANTASY. Heck I’d bathe in the damn thing if it were substantial enough to do so (yes I meant substantial, though not huge there is a fair bit of me ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). I do however try to branch out on the genres I read as you can find some real gems in the most unexpected places. For example, if you get a chance please read my review on the awe inspiring Zeroย by J.S Collyer. Now I’m not usually one for sci-fi but the story was immense with in-depth scene setting and characters who you saw as human rather then plot points, but I digress… Jessica is one of these lovely little gems that reaches out and grabs you by the throat screaming READ ME, READ ME NOW and not once will you be disappointed that you did.

If you have not heeded my advice before pop on over to Helena’s blog now, she is one of my most favourite writers. There you will find a scrummy assortment of literary ooey gooey goodness that will leave you in awe of the very writer you seek. Helena herself is a writer and dilettante of such high calibre that I feel honoured to review her work. As icing on the cake this collection includes another of my most favourite writers, J.S Collyer. The author of Zero lends her literary genius to this collection to help complete the the dazzling effect of the overall narrative.

The book entitled Jessica is a bid to answer the question who is Jessica B Bell. It is essentially a horror story told from the perspective of other people with one character seeming to be the more main narrators throughout. Now if you have been on Helena’s website you’ll see the mysterious Jessica figure mentioned a lot, in both passing and as author of some fantastic narratives of her own. But who is she? What ensues is such an adventure of intrigue and questions for the protagonist Helena that you are left reeling even as you continue to read. We’re never treat to interaction with Jessica ourselves but multiple points of her life are related by those who have met her, those who have met her and gone mad and those who have met her and stopped themselves before they went mad. Is Jessica such a demon to be feared? The great thing about this book is that you can relate to the stories as you read them and I can’t talk for others but I certainly found my heart pounding as I read the horrors these tales related. Imagine mutilating your own face so you don’t speak of the demons you know are real? Or witnessing the birth of a demon child through the face of the mother, a mother who has been plagued by a demon voice for so long?

This collective narrative is very well written, encompassing the more thrilling aspects of horror without being too overtly gory. The language used is also exceptional in that it’s used to the greatest effect,

‘Then she twirled and sauntered away, though in my eyes her head twisted and her eyes stayed on me right until she was out of sight.’

I know right? Ahhhhhhh that was chilling and gave me the creeps at the same time, but I have to say one of my favourite sentences came from the very beginning of the book. It’s decadent and lavish and as if you’re rolling around in velvety caramel,

‘There are rumours that I keep a writer trapped in my basement, chained to a chair, writing stories by candlelight in her own blood on dirty yellow parchment, but I assure you, those rumours are exaggerations, darlings.’

It’s this level of creative genius that flows straight through the book. Undoubtedly it’s a brilliant piece of well written horror that you will find engrossing, thrilling, scary and unique. I urge you to pick up this book today as you won’t be disappointed. I really cannot say one bad thing about any of the writers as they all work in such an exceptional way that it really makes a literary geek such as myself happy.

Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

What’s Your Panic?

Evening lovely readers ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m still hard at work on the edits of my novel. It’s interesting to see how I can improve my work without losing the core of the narrative, but I digress. Let me ask you this, is there anything that terrifies you? Do you have a phobia you just can’t explain? Is it enhanced by any other mental states? My friend and fabulous author Helena Hann-Basquiatย has set other writers a challenge: to write a short fiction about a phobia. Thankfully it can be any genre and any word length be it two hundred or two thousand; but where to begin…

Now, I’m going to admit something here that may shock you (well unless you know me in real life lol) in that I myself suffer with one or two phobias. Well, when I say one or two I mean aquaphobia (fear of water), mysophobia (fear of uncleanliness/germs), arachnophobia (I know, I know, who isn’t afraid of arachnids?) and mild claustrophobia (I just can’t take small enclosed spaces sometimes.) I can already hear you running away screaming from the mad woman ๐Ÿ™‚ well let me put more speed in your step. These phobia’s are only enhanced by the fact that I’m a paranoid obsessive compulsive too lol. Stop laughing and don’t have me committed just yet as although I suffer with these I believe that even they are part of my creativeness and make me the wacky writer I am today.

So where am I struggling? I hear you ask. Well, for this subject at least I find it hard to write fiction about something I’ve suffered from forever. But wait, shouldn’t writer’s write what they know? Yes and no to be honest. Yes I’ve suffered with these all my life but how do I put into word the complicated and often nonsensical thoughts I have? However, in a sense perhaps it will be easier after all. The thoughts from my phobia’s are nonsensical so I just need a genre that fits that aspect. I could write a fantasy based in an aquatic World or a horror about killer germs. Whatever I decide I know that it will be based on my own experiences and of that I’m not ashamed ๐Ÿ™‚ so keep an eye out for my writing to appear. I hope you will not be disappointed.

Oh and for your information, I will be bringing a book review out soon of Helena’s fabulous novel Jessica. A collaborative effort, which includes work from the always wonderful J. S. Collyer,ย this book seeks to determine who is Jessica. B. Bell. Those familiar with Helena’s work will have heard mention this name before. It’s a literary slice of ooey gooey suspenseful cake that I firmly have my pearly ivory’sย in to. I just have to finish it ๐Ÿ™‚

Love to you all ๐Ÿ™‚

Going to Hell in a Handbasket

Evening lovely readers ๐Ÿ™‚

hell in a handbasketFirst off has anyone else heard the saying in my title? I was always positive it existed but everyone around me looked at me like I’d grown a second head and started breathing purple fire. “What? Never heard of it…” “you must have made it up…” lol. Well now I can officially say that it does exist and it means that circumstances are being led to disaster. Nuh ny nuh to all those doubters lol ๐Ÿ™‚ Anyhoo slightly off topic…

This saying does in fact relate, at least partially, to what I am doing now. I have to think of a new title for my novel. I know right? I’d rather rewrite the damn thing than rethink the title solely because my brain seems to have taken on writer’s brain block. Okay, so it’s all not going to disaster but my brain is definitely hurting right now… As some will know my novel is currently called I Cast Magic Into the Darkness. I originally chose this title to show the confusion my protagonist feels at the circumstances she finds herself in. Now I have no idea how to pick one. How the heck do I avoid falling into a stereotypical fantasy trap of a title?

Some of my favourite authors have adopted varied techniques when naming their own works. Christine Feehan opted for the more repetitive option with her Dark Carpathian series as, for example, she starts the series with Dark Princeย and each book that follows begins with dark in the title. For the way the series develops this is inspired as it really adds to the effect of the darkness that each protagonist must fight against. In contrast, The Belgariad and The Mallorean series written by the exceptional David Eddings chooses a fantastical title to encompass what happens in the books in general. For example, the first book of the Belgariad series is entitled Pawn of Prophecy which aptly describes what Garion is and what his journey will be through the two series and beyond. It’s with examples like these that I wish I had the the type of genius to come up with equally epic titles.

You see my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Love to you all. Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

Coming Soooonnnnnnnnn

Evening lovely readers ๐Ÿ™‚

This is just a quick post to say I do have two posts ready to be published for your enjoyment. However, rather stupidly, I have embibed too much cider (mmmm, cider) and I want to check the posts when sober to make sure I don’t sound too much like a plonker ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s that bad I’ve checked and rechecked this post several times. So thank you for your patience and see you tomorrow ๐Ÿ™‚
