Pen Names: A Post From a Confused Soul

Evening lovely readers 🙂

I have to ask; what’s in a pen name? It seems such an archaic term given writers mainly use computers now. I will however say that I do still whip out the old pen and note pad should a creative spark strike.

As you’ll see from the title of this page I tend to go by A K Hinchey. I have however had work published under Andrea Hinchey. So what’s the big deal I hear you cry; they’re both your name. Well yes they are but how do you decide which version to use? Being published under one then the other, will readers link you to all your work? Should you use one for your main (perhaps most loved) genre while using another to try something new? Do you see where my confusion lies? I have yet to have a book published and am unsure which version to use should Hell freeze over and some unsuspecting publishers pick my novel over others 🙂

I will say one of the most creative pen names I’ve seen is that of one of my friends and a fantastic author. Helena Hann-Basquiat is a dynamic and multi-faceted person with creativity literally oozing from every pore. The writing is layered in excellence coupled with a decadent style few can hope to achieve, myself included. BUT the persona of Helena can act to distance the author from themselves. Given I know the reason I can completely see why Helena did this. Doing this also gives you a sense of freedom to create what you will unencumbered by past attempts and circumstance. It must be very liberating. I still cannot decide however if I would want to stick to one name for everything so people can see my diversity…

Ah well, I’m sure I’ll get there one day 😉

Thank you 🙂

Memoirs of a Dilettante Volume Two by Helena Hann-Basquiat

Evening lovely readers 🙂

Today is super exciting. In this short post I get to reveal to you Helena Hann-Basquiat’s, one of my favourite writers, forthcoming novel Memoirs of a Dilettante volume Two. As many will know, Helena is a wonderfully imaginative writer with a widely ranging handle on many different genres. I myself have been privilaged enough to read several of her thrilling horrors that leave you desperate for more. However here’s what she has to say on her new book:

MEMOIRS OF A DILETTANTE VOLUME TWO – COVER REVEAL!
COMING SPRING 2015 — official date TBA

Memoirs of a Dilettante Volume Two is the second collection of reminiscences, following Helena Hann-Basquiat, a self-proclaimed dilettante who will try anything just to say that she has, and her twenty-something niece, who she has dubbed the Countess Penelope of Arcadia.

Speaking of Arcadia, this volume delves into Helena’s childhood, as she revisits what she calls the Arcadia of the mind — that place that keeps us trapped and holds us back from our potential. Some of her most personal stories are included here, interspersed with hilarious stories of misadventure. It’s not a novel, really, and it’s not a memoir, by the strictest definition. But most of what follows, as they say, is true. Sort of. Almost. From a certain point of view.

Discover Helena’s tales for the first time or all over again, with new notes and annotations for the culturally impaired — or for those who just need to know what the hell was going through her mind at the time!

Helena is going to be running a crowdfunding/pre-order campaign at Pubslush, a community focused solely on indie writers, and has set up a profile there to launch Memoirs of a Dilettante Volume Two.

She has been a great friend to me and personally I will always strive to be more like her in the literary World.

She has set up a crowdfunding page on Pubslush where if you support the book you may just get some exciting goodies in return. Imagine helping to support a wonderful writer in her life long dream. You get ooey gooey happy feelings as well as exclusivity in the literary World.

BIO:

The enigmatic Helena Hann-Basquiat dabbles in whatever she can get her hands into just to say that she has.
She’s written cookbooks, ten volumes of horrible poetry that she then bound herself in leather she tanned poorly from cows she raised herself and then slaughtered because she was bored with farming.

She has an entire portfolio of macaroni art that she’s never shown anyone, because she doesn’t think that the general populous or, “the great unwashed masses” as she calls them, would understand the statement she was trying to make with them.
Some people attribute the invention of the Ampersand to her, but she has never made that claim herself.

In 2014, she published Memoirs of a Dilettante Volume One, several e-books which now make up Volume Two, as well as a multimedia collaborative piece of meta-fictional horror entitled JESSICA.

Memoirs of a Dilettante Volume One is available HERE in e-book for Kindle or HERE in paperback.

Helena writes strange, dark fiction under the name Jessica B. Bell.

How Do You When You Haven’t in a While???

Evening lovely readers 🙂

I hope you’re all well. Happy New Year 🙂 As you know it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything. Alas, what can only be described as a family packed Christmas and frankly Hellish New Year got in the way. I have however managed to get all the edits done on my novel and gotten it back to my editor. Yay right? 🙂 Well yes but this presents me with a whole new set of circumstances I’ve not been in for a while. I now have the burning, eternally nagging desire to write the second in the series…….

My first novel Incarnate, now happily nestled in the arms of my cracking editor, is for want of a better phrase my baby. No matter how many times it gets sent back to me I’ll work on it and work on it until some lovely publisher can’t live without it. There’s no problem there. But you see, I’ve been working on that story for nine years give or take six and a half years of disastrous time with my ex fiancè and no desire to write what so ever. My beloved characters are now so very firmly set in the events of my first novel that to be honest I’m finding it hard to start the second one. I know where I must begin but what if my ability to re-establish my protagonist suffers due to my inability to get past the first story? What if my scene setting is no longer believable? (Though I do write fantasy lol). These are the thoughts that plague me.

Others were I know how to begin it but I don’t; I know what I want my characters to do but how do I portray that? Do I use tried and true techniques like dreams or go for a bit of realism? Should the magic kick everything off or should we have a nice, meaty battle to begin? These questions are neither here nor there to be honest though, I do love a challenge 🙂 I guess I’m just trying to portray to you my happiness in continuing to write and carrying on with a story as close to my heart as my own little family is. Hence the erratic flow of thought and endless questions 🙂

Anyway I’m off to at least try to continue. I think I’ll do a book review tomorrow. Toodles 🙂

Fear in a Handful of Dust

Evening lovely readers 🙂

Here is a guest post by yours truly exploring the concept of fear and phobias. Admittedly I have a few so I could pull from life but everyone should have a go at writing out of their comfort zone. I hope you enjoy and I hope you follow Helena for some great fiction with ooey gooey literary goodness 🙂

Thank you 🙂

Going to Hell in a Handbasket

Evening lovely readers 🙂

hell in a handbasketFirst off has anyone else heard the saying in my title? I was always positive it existed but everyone around me looked at me like I’d grown a second head and started breathing purple fire. “What? Never heard of it…” “you must have made it up…” lol. Well now I can officially say that it does exist and it means that circumstances are being led to disaster. Nuh ny nuh to all those doubters lol 🙂 Anyhoo slightly off topic…

This saying does in fact relate, at least partially, to what I am doing now. I have to think of a new title for my novel. I know right? I’d rather rewrite the damn thing than rethink the title solely because my brain seems to have taken on writer’s brain block. Okay, so it’s all not going to disaster but my brain is definitely hurting right now… As some will know my novel is currently called I Cast Magic Into the Darkness. I originally chose this title to show the confusion my protagonist feels at the circumstances she finds herself in. Now I have no idea how to pick one. How the heck do I avoid falling into a stereotypical fantasy trap of a title?

Some of my favourite authors have adopted varied techniques when naming their own works. Christine Feehan opted for the more repetitive option with her Dark Carpathian series as, for example, she starts the series with Dark Prince and each book that follows begins with dark in the title. For the way the series develops this is inspired as it really adds to the effect of the darkness that each protagonist must fight against. In contrast, The Belgariad and The Mallorean series written by the exceptional David Eddings chooses a fantastical title to encompass what happens in the books in general. For example, the first book of the Belgariad series is entitled Pawn of Prophecy which aptly describes what Garion is and what his journey will be through the two series and beyond. It’s with examples like these that I wish I had the the type of genius to come up with equally epic titles.

You see my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Love to you all. Thank you 🙂

#Flash Sunday (you knew it was coming) – A Life Worth Living

Hello lovely readers.

2233139278_4453e5cee0

Well it seems I’m making a nasty habit of this. I always promise a post a day and that this is coming then or then or then and then of course something gets in the way. I kid you not; I’ve had to go out in search of missing nieces, I attended my friends wedding of the century and I’ve plain just been too tired sometimes. So, now I’m going to just promise I will be posting a heck of a lot just sometimes it may not be everyday lol 🙂

Okay, so I promised a #FlashFriday to celebrate gaining over one hundred new friends. Alas, tiredness and a wedding prevented me from doing that so here’s my #FlashSunday. I tried to not make it fantasy but failed miserably. I had thought to write a series of diary entries consisting of some of the hectic emotions I suffered over the last couple of years but damn I must have been boring lol 🙂 Anyway I hope you enjoy this outing better 🙂

A Life Worth Living

Alexiel had to sigh. What Bard worth their salt couldn’t come up with a tale? She was due before the King in one hour but her mind was still cruelly blank. A trickle of cold sweat travelled mockingly down her brow. What path was possibly left to her now?

Oh she knew where her mind block began. She hadn’t been able to create at all since Mikhail had crushed her spirit and then tried to literally crush her. The constant insults and attacks on her confidence she could handle but a gigantic floating boulder? Not so much. Damn mages. Should stick to the library where they belong.

She sighed again. She was wary when he had asked her to dance at the gathering. Mages always had some trick or other up their ridiculously long sleeves; but she had been flattered by the older mage and in awe of his handsome looks. She snorted. If only she had known he wouldn’t keep them.

She glanced at the throne room doors, half her brain worrying about her lack of creativity. The other half contemplated the six and a half years lost to the magical worm. She straightened her deep purple bards robes nervously, wondering how she’d let her mind focus on him. She supposed it was easier than assaulting her mind block, or part of her was angry at the loss of years, or heck that even now she worried how others saw her. She was a bard, her position alone earned her respect. Now however she knew her image had been affected what with being so wrapped up in him. She was severely disgusted in herself.

As she glanced at the throne room once again she was shocked to see the great oaken doors open. Surely it couldn’t be time already? She almost swallowed her tongue as her gaze met a mutual piercing ice blue one. A man had exited; he wore the fine velvet garments of a Lord but something seemed a little off. She couldn’t sense a magical aura but that didn’t mean there wasn’t one. He came towards her with kind eyes and a wicked smile and she swore her heart leapt. What is this?

“Greetings Lady Bard,” he said in a mesmerising voice. “I am Lord Duna Ain. It’s a pleasure to meet you. The King speaks so highly of you,” he took her hand and pressed his soft lips to it. At this point she knew she should reply but her mind had turned to fairy mush. Wow, he’s one handsome man. It was evident he could see his effect on her as he smiled once again and said,
“I will see you soon.”
She could be wrong but did his eyes just flash ice blue flames? She watched as he walked briskly away. Wow what an ass.

She shook her head as she was called into the room and realised she had been staring a while. What a mysterious effect this Lord had on her. She found herself hoping they would meet again. She smiled with sudden brilliant clarity; she could now see her story complete with a dashing rogue that had a devilish grin and ice blue eyes. She loved her brain when it worked. Silently nodding her thanks she turned and entered the glittering throne room complete with over a hundred listeners. Every one was a friend and every one she loved.

We Have a Release Date…

Evening lovely readers 🙂

Well I’m very excited to say that my great friend J.S Collyer now has a release date for her super début novel Zero 🙂

Do you like science fiction? Do you like adventure? Do you like space pirates with lasers? I hear you all cry “What a daft question, of course we do.” Well then you won’t be disappointed with this excellent package of literary magnificence. The official book launch will be on the 16th August 2014 at the epic Fantasticon where J S Collyer will be signing copies, talking sci fi and just generally being quite frankly awesome. Luckily the eBook and paperback will be available on Amazon on the same day. I personally cannot wait. I do in fact have an advance copy for the purposes of reviewing it but there’s nothing like having a book written by one of your best friends officially on your Kindle. In having an advance copy I can in fact tell you that the novel is proving to be as fabulous as I expected and was it not that real life keeps interjecting I would be constantly reading this 🙂 Please keep your peepers peeled for my official review as I can promise it won’t disappoint: an awesome review for an awesome book I say 😉

In other news I can officially say that I have started my second novel while my first is being edited. As a bit of a difference I am not writing the sequel to my first novel, though I have that firmly ensconced in my mind, but another novel that I posted on here a while back. Then it was called Frozen due to it being about a blind winter fae archer but given the recent Disney outing I felt a title change was in order so soon there will be a post on my new Tears of Ice.

Thank you 🙂

We live in a world were it seems to be opened season on consumers. So, is there evidence that detox foot patches work? we can confidently say yes! The visual proof after using detoxifying foot pads is credible. The improvement is obvious when used over several consecutive days.
