How Do You When You Haven’t in a While???

Evening lovely readers 🙂

I hope you’re all well. Happy New Year 🙂 As you know it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything. Alas, what can only be described as a family packed Christmas and frankly Hellish New Year got in the way. I have however managed to get all the edits done on my novel and gotten it back to my editor. Yay right? 🙂 Well yes but this presents me with a whole new set of circumstances I’ve not been in for a while. I now have the burning, eternally nagging desire to write the second in the series…….

My first novel Incarnate, now happily nestled in the arms of my cracking editor, is for want of a better phrase my baby. No matter how many times it gets sent back to me I’ll work on it and work on it until some lovely publisher can’t live without it. There’s no problem there. But you see, I’ve been working on that story for nine years give or take six and a half years of disastrous time with my ex fiancè and no desire to write what so ever. My beloved characters are now so very firmly set in the events of my first novel that to be honest I’m finding it hard to start the second one. I know where I must begin but what if my ability to re-establish my protagonist suffers due to my inability to get past the first story? What if my scene setting is no longer believable? (Though I do write fantasy lol). These are the thoughts that plague me.

Others were I know how to begin it but I don’t; I know what I want my characters to do but how do I portray that? Do I use tried and true techniques like dreams or go for a bit of realism? Should the magic kick everything off or should we have a nice, meaty battle to begin? These questions are neither here nor there to be honest though, I do love a challenge 🙂 I guess I’m just trying to portray to you my happiness in continuing to write and carrying on with a story as close to my heart as my own little family is. Hence the erratic flow of thought and endless questions 🙂

Anyway I’m off to at least try to continue. I think I’ll do a book review tomorrow. Toodles 🙂

Yahoo I Have a Deadline

Afternoon dear bloggers 🙂 Just a mini post today 🙂

I know what you’re thinking from the title of the post; yep she must be crazy. Won’t a deadline just add to the stress? Strangely yes and no. A deadline will spur me to work on my novel and try to perfect it to the best of my abilities. Have you never found focus in dwindling time? I’m so excited 🙂 Those who may read my blog will notice I haven’t posted anything in a long time. This is due to the fact that my baby girl is now three months old. She’s the most beautiful and perfect little girl you will ever see but my gosh it takes some energy looking after her 🙂 So, I haven’t had much time at all to do any writing. However, I’ve recently had dialogue with my editor who wants my novel by the end of May 🙂 So I have a month and a half to perfect it 🙂 Yay, somehow I feel more focused, more determined and so happy my writing is finally going somewhere 🙂

As to my novel the rewrite is going well. My main male character is now far more manly and powerful. The story flows far more smoothly and the characters now make more sense. Among the major changes I have also made a few minor ones. My main character was called Alyssa. I picked this name years ago before I had even met my boyfriend but since he picked the name Alyssia for our beautiful girl I couldn’t help but change it in my novel to Alyssia too. It’s a beautiful name and I hope in some small way a nice dedication to my firstborn. I really hope my editor will like my novel. I’m almost bursting with happiness 🙂

Anyhoo, back to the writing I go 🙂 I hope you’ve all had a stellar weekend 🙂

The perils and pleasures of being an editor

Read this brilliant article 🙂 I have to admit I’ve never laughed out loud as much. This is an example of a great editor with a keen eye and a good view of what we should look out for as a writer for when we need help 🙂

Eagle-Eyed Editor

As a professional editor, I’m often asked to read someone else’s writing. I’ve edited people’s resumes, books, requests for proposals, news articles, press releases, short stories, newsletters and other written pieces.

Sometimes it’s easy. In some cases, all that’s needed is proofreading. I check over spelling, punctuation, grammar and other basics, marking up the work with a red pen or using MS Word’s editing feature.

But if someone’s work requires substantive editing….well, that’s a judgement call. Substantive editing is when you check the overall parts of what you’re editing: Does it make sense for the target audience? Is the wording going to be confusing or should it be simplified? Is the writing well organized? Have the facts been double-checked for accuracy?

Substantive editing requires diplomacy. Some writers don’t mind the changes when the writing improves due to the editing. Others get feisty, wanting to sneak up behind me and whack…

Chop, Chop, Editing Block

I have begun the process of editing my novel after taking a little break from it. Once I had finished the storyline I was elated but I felt my mind was a little frayed from the creative overload so I left it for a while. I’m glad I did this as now I can look at it with what I intend to be an objective eye.

Or at least that WAS my intention. Reading through now I can see things that need improving; some continuity based, some descriptive based. My problem begins when cutting or adding to the narrative content itself. I know myself and some other writers have the problem of reading through and just loving everything, awkwardly placed or no. I know this stems from the fact that we wrote it and so we love it, but the essential thing is we need to make sure our stories flow.

My writer friend Jex suggested several tactics to help with editing. She suggested, among others,  reading out loud which is the predominant technique I use myself. Read through the novel and if you stumble in any area then you know it needs work. This still doesn’t help with seperating objectivity with love of your own written word. I am determined however 🙂

Editing is proving to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience and I look forward to the ultimate outcome.

Do you have any editing techniques you live by?

Thank you.
